Local car club and Shriners partner for a good cause

HALFWAY — Looking over the engine in the back of his 1960 Corvair 700, George Burgey recalled how he bought the car for $250 at a salvage yard about 21 years ago.

It turned out the flywheel needed fixing, the Maugansville resident said.

Burgey, 67, said he plans to paint the charcoal car in cream or “butternut yellow,” a color the car once bore and is still visible under its hood.

Burgey’s car was one of 52 on display this weekend as part of the eighth annual Cabin Fever Kruz-N inside Valley Mall.

The nonprofit Classic Car Group for Children holds the event at the mall each winter, while the Ali Ghan Shriners hold a screening for area children who might need assistance through Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The car club has partnered with Shriners for the past five years, donating about $46,000 in proceeds from its cruise-in and weekly car shows during the warmer months to the Shriners based in Cumberland, Md., said Larry Sulser, the car club’s president.

Dr. Vandana Sajankila, a pediatrician with The Children’s Doctor, was volunteering with the Shriners on Sunday to screen children for musculoskeletal or spinal injuries or conditions, severe burns or minor burns with complications, and cleft lips or cleft palates.

Shriners members surprised Sajankila with a plaque for helping Shriners in recent years.

Sajankila said Shriners assists children who need special help, even with insurance and transportation issues that could be hurdles for families looking for specialized care for children.

The car club presented its latest check, for $6,000, to the Shriners in November, Sulser said.

That donation went to the transportation fund, which pays for fuel to transport patients and their families, as well as the cost of food and lodging for families, said Major Warren, screening clinic coordinator for the Shriners.

While Burgey is happy to talk about the car his brother, Irving, helped him restore, the event is really about the children the club can help, he said.

“(They) are our future. (They) are everything,” he said.
