Okay, not all BMW engines are junk, but there have been a few that aren’t exactly on the top of the dependability list

As a car enthusiast who spends some of its time watching YouTube, you may have stumbled onto Tyler Hoover’s channel – Hoovie’s Garage. The YouTuber consistently opens up with the slogan “The dumbest automotive channel on YouTube”, but we like to think it’s more of an educational/entertaining automotive channel. Mostly with regards to what we shouldn’t be buying. With this in mind, Tyler, once again, walks us through (or under) one of his many “hoopties”, as he likes to call them.
The car in question is a BMW 740i from the E38 generation. And, as shown in the video, it’s proof why BMW engines are complete and utter garbage. This might be heart-breaking to some, as this particular generation of the Bavarian executive sedan is largely praised for being one of the most reliable full-size German sedans, ever made. And yet, it’s still an endless money pit.
Now the 4.4-liter V-8, in itself, is a good unit. It makes 286 horsepower and 324 pound-feet (440 Nm), which makes for a respectable 6.7-second sprint to 60 mph (97 km/h) and a 155-mph (250 km/h) top speed.
|0 to 60 mph||6.7 seconds|
|Top Speed||155 mph|
The otherwise stout unit can, however, be totaled, because someone from BMW decided that the timing chain can do with plastic guides. Regardless, in typical Hoovie fashion, the video below shows that this is not the only problem, plaguing the German sedan.
